News: The 225-foot-long monumental national flag made by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), which was unveiled earlier in Leh, will be displayed at Red Fort to celebrate 100 crore COVID-19 vaccinations.
The tricolour made of Khadi, which weighs 1,400 kg, is 150 feet wide and was conceptualised to celebrate “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”.
It was displayed at Leh in the Union Territory of Ladakh on October 2. As many as 180 Army jawans tugged the flag to a hilltop, 13,000 feet above sea level.
The Army is the custodian of the flag as the flag code has to be adhered while displaying it. A KVIC official said the flag will be used on a rotational basis for all events of national importance in the coming days.

2. M777 HOWITZER
News: The Army has significantly augmented its firepower along the 1,300-km Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the eastern sector, while also beefing up overall defences in the region, especially in the Tawang sector, by integrating various services in real time through automation.
About M777 Howitzer:
The M777 howitzer is a towed 155 mm artillery piece.
It is used by the ground forces of Australia, Canada, India, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.
It made its combat debut in the War in Afghanistan.
The M777 is manufactured by BAE Systems’ Global Combat Systems division.
Prime contract management is based in Barrow-in-Furness in the United Kingdom as well as manufacture and assembly of the titanium structures and associated recoil components. Final integration and testing of the weapon is undertaken at BAE’s facility in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
With a weight of 4,200 kg (9,300 lb), the M777 is 41% lighter than the 7,154 kg (15,772 lb) M198 howitzer it replaces.
Much of the weight reduction is due to the extensive use of titanium.
The M777 uses a digital fire-control system.
Titanium is a chemical element with the symbol Ti and atomic number 22. Its atomic weight is 47.867 measured in daltons.
It is a lustrous transition metal with a silver color, low density, and high strength, resistant to corrosion in sea water, aqua regia, and chlorine.
Titanium was discovered in Cornwall, Great Britain, by William Gregor in 1791.
The element occurs within a number of mineral deposits, principally rutile and ilmenite, which are widely distributed in the Earth’s crust and lithosphere; it is found in almost all living things, as well as bodies of water, rocks, and soils.
Titanium can be alloyed with iron, aluminium, vanadium, and molybdenum, among other elements, to produce strong, lightweight alloys for aerospace (jet engines, missiles, and spacecraft), military, industrial processes (chemicals and petrochemicals, desalination plants, pulp, and paper), automotive, agriculture (farming), medical prostheses, orthopedic implants, dental and endodontic instruments and files, dental implants, sporting goods, jewelry, mobile phones, and other applications.
The two most useful properties of the metal are corrosion resistance and strength-to-density ratio, the highest of any metallic element.
